The opening credits on arte
The opening credits are always a promise. And in Gaspar Noé's films, they hold a particularly important place. Proof of this can be found in this new video from Blow Up, a small anthology of the filmmaker's opening credits, curated by writer and director Alexandre Tylski. From the outset, Noé's opening credits assault the eyes, disrupt the images, and warn of the jolts to come.
The opening credits are always a promise. And in Gaspar Noé's films, they hold a particularly important place. Proof of this can be found in this new video from Blow Up, a small anthology of the filmmaker's opening credits, curated by writer and director Alexandre Tylski. Right from the start, Noé's opening credits assault the eyes, disrupt the images, and foreshadow the visual shocks to come: it's the inverted typography of the opening of Irreversible ; his way of directly addressing the viewer through unsettling asides ("You've seen a Gaspar Noé film" at the end of I Stand Alone); of abolishing the boundary between epilogue and prologue ( Climax opening with its end credits and concluding with its title).
In Love , the opening credits, a fragmented assemblage of successive title cards, mirror the protagonists: a compact kaleidoscope of confused emotions. The credits of Enter the Void , with their epileptic quality, demand the mobilization of all the senses with its rapid-fire montage of eight title cards per second, scrolling through famous typefaces. Hallucinogenic, matrix-like, and abyssal, Gaspar Noé's opening credits are to be savored like a sweet and slightly unsettling trip.
